With springtime only six weeks away, the Meadowlark Nature Festival is gearing up for its much-anticipated return to the South Okanagan.

It was announced in November that the festival would be returning for the weekend of May 20 to 23 after a two-year hiatus, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since then, event coordinators have been making sure community members know the nature tours are making a comeback.

“COVID-19 has disrupted plans for many of us the past couple of years,” said Paul Lockington, the Meadowlark Nature Festival’s coordinator, in a letter on Feb. 3.

“We are currently reaching out to our group of tour guides and volunteers to ensure that the tours we present are as diverse and interesting as we can make them.”

The local nature festival will feature a number of guided tours around some of the South Okanagan’s most interesting places.

But as the spring inches closer, Lockington wants people to know that the tours may not feel the same as they have in the past.

“We have had a new set of rules imposed upon us and we will be adhering to all the regulations regarding COVID-19. Those rules are changing frequently, so this may mean that some of our tours will necessarily be smaller.”

Along with reintroducing the concept of nature tours to many, the coordinator also said that preparation for this year’s festival has been delayed and that the event is running on a tight budget.

The annual tour has celebrated the natural environment of the South Okanagan since 1998.
