A new fast-paced sporting event will be rolling into the Penticton Peach Festival this August.

The South Okanagan Roller Derby Association is scheduled to host a two-hour skating demo at the 75th-anniversary of the festival on Aug. 6.

After a year of showcasing the sport at pop-up events across Penticton, the association is ready to carry its momentum into one of the Okanagan’s biggest summertime festivals.

“We are so excited for this opportunity to bring the joy of roller derby and roller skating to our community,” said Cassandra Capone, one of the event organizers. “If you just want to learn a bit more about that crazy-looking sport you see us play, or if you want to get out and roll around, this will be a great event for people of all ages.”

From 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., the group will host a roller derby demonstration, a learn-to-skate program and an open skate at Penticton’s outdoor skating rink at 107 Martin Street.

“The entire Peach Festival board is excited to welcome this skating demonstration to help celebrate our 75th festival this summer,” Don Kendall stated, the Peach Festival president.

“Over the past year we have seen the pop-up roller skating events hosted in Penticton and the South Okanagan and they have had a great response from people of all ages.”

The learn-to-skate program will be first-come, first-served, with roller derby equipment available for rent at Penticton Roller Skate.

Pop-up skating events have been a rolling success in Penticton, according to the association, who started off 2022 by hosting special-themed nights at the city’s trade and convention centre.
