Lights of Christmas

It’s easy to get enamoured by the diversity of lights and forget where this tradition came from

One of my favourite parts of Christmas is the array of lights that adorn our town.

Those rich purple lights down Main Street this year are spectacular, and for a small town, I think we have some pretty creative people!

Several times over the season my wife and I (or with our grandkids) cruise down “Candy Cane Lane” as we call it to see the amazing displays by the folks on that street (it’s actually Beavis Crescent.)

I think my favourite is the house up on South Victoria near our church which has every tree, bush and the entire roof line decorated with almost neon colours.

The lights on the roof are straight and placed there with meticulous care. I love it!

It’s easy to get enamoured by the diversity of lights and forget where this tradition came from.

Both the lights on our homes and streets as well as the lights on the Christmas trees are simply a reminder of the Light of the World.

I think it’s so appropriate that God ordained the light of the Bethlehem Star to mark the birth of Jesus, the Light of the World (John 8:12).

The Bible is full of references to the One Who Spoke, “And there was light” (Genesis 1:3), Who is the “Father of lights” (James 1:17), Who told us to “Let your light shine before men…” (Matthew 5:16), Who reminds us that “The Lord is my light and salvation” (Psalms 27:1).

This season, may the lights of Christmas remind you of the one who is “The Light of the World”… Jesus!

Christmas Eve services are held Dec. 24 at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Pastor Del Riemer is the associate pastor at Summerland Baptist Church.
