Dear Editor:

Volunteers are the backbone of the Summerland Arts Council. In years gone by, there was always a volunteer on hand to oversee the gift gallery and exhibits. And, every arts council I’ve ever visited has always had volunteers on duty.

With the expanded partnership with the district’s recreation department, the arts council administrator has had considerable additional obligations foisted upon her shoulders. I, along with several others associated with the arts council have become well aware of the imbalance that now exists with our administrator having to wear two hats at the same time and still be responsible for day-to-day operations.

Over the past few months Susan Gibbs and I have been working hard to sort out both the upstairs and downstairs storage areas at the arts centre.

We have spent considerable effort dealing with donations of equipment, books, art objects, and sundry other items that people have left in our care thinking we could make use of them. Unfortunately, this is not always the case and we’ve had to dispose of a large amount of material we cannot use. Cash donations are much more welcome.

On Saturday, April 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at our Stash Bash, we will once again try to off-load items that have taken up space and energy. Susan and I have so far undertaken this project on our own, but we need help to cart items upstairs to display, set up and take down tables, organize vendors, etc.

Volunteers are needed for this very important re-purposing, recycling, etc. event that celebrates the spirit of Earth Week and raises funds which help the Arts Council continue its good work.

Jean Evanishen
