It was a close call, but only two local chefs are heading to the annual Souperbowl Nov. 3.
Sunday’s winner, Dan Prokosh of The Black Antler, will face off against Danielle Doiron, from Block 300 Casual Steakhouse, next weekend.
The friendly competition at the Soupateria on Orchard Street was in full swing Sunday morning with Prokosh and Bad Tattoo’s Donnie Carlson stirring up tasty concoctions for Soupateria patrons.
“The people here at the Soupateria are fantastic people,” Prokosh said.
“I’m more than happy to be invited to the occasion, to be able to put smiles on some faces here and have a little fun with some high school students and some friendly competition with my neighbour from Bad Tattoo.”
Prokosh made a smoked barbecue pulled pork soup with pork that roasted for eight hours. A sofrito sauce added the spice to it, he said. Carlson cooked up a bean and beef chili.
Later in the afternoon, city councillors Frank Regehr and Judy Sentes along with Dave Smith, owner of Penticton Security, showed up as celebrity judges.
Kilys Peterson, a student at Penticton Secondary School, participating as a sous chef, called the event a fun learning experience.
“You meet all these different chefs and then you see the different recipes and how they work and then you get to see which is better,” he said, adding it felt good to help out at the Soupateria.
The Souper Bowl is an entertaining way to let people know what happens at the Soupateria while raising its profile in the community, according to the organizers.
The competition also aims to stimulate volunteerism and increase awareness and acceptance of people in the community who need the Soupateria.
