Clients at Penticton’s Discovery House have been cooking up batches of soup for the last three weeks in support of their annual Soup is Good Food fundraiser.

But their soup is so good that it’s getting a reputation for itself and selling out faster than they can make it.

On Tuesday (Feb. 22), the cooks got some good news ahead of their first delivery day.

“On Tuesday, we sold out [the first week],” said Jerome Abraham, Discovery House’s executive director, who spoke to the Western News while hundreds of soup orders are placed for Friday (Feb. 25) delivery.

People around the community have had the better half of February to place orders ahead of Friday. From roasted red pepper to spicy Thai carrot, French onion and hamburger - the gourmet soups also come with Cobs buns and McDonald’s coffee.

Discovery House has raised over $4,000 after receiving 533 orders.

Clients who reside at the house — a place dedicated to addiction recovery — have spent time making the food while learning a new hobby or potential career in the process.

“They’re having fun and we got a world-class chef in there with them this time,” Abraham added.

“The guys are actually learning stuff and loving it.”

Soup deliveries courtesy of Discovery House will also be made on March 4, 11, 18 and 25.

Even though soup orders for Feb. 25 are no longer available, Abraham is encouraging people to place orders and donate to the cause for the other delivery days in advance with March 4 featuring everything from hamburger and veggie chili to split pea and ham.

“The menu for March 4 I imagine will be sold out by Tuesday,” he stated.

“If not, we’ll take orders until Wednesday.”

Discovery House raised just under $15,000 last year during its soup fundraiser.

The program’s executive director is hoping to match that amount yet again this time around.

One portion of soup costs $8. Orders come with Cobs’ buns and McDonald’s coffee.

People wanting to place orders for the following three delivery days are asked to visit discoveryhouserecovery.com/food.
