West Bench Elementary School is hosting a Remembrance Day that recognizes local and Indigenous veterans ahead of Nov. 11.
The event, held at Selby Park in West Bench, honours the community’s history and the contributions of Indigenous and other local veterans. The school has invited the community to attend the ceremony which starts at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
“West Bench Elementary is lucky to have tremendous support from our neighbours and we are excited to once again come together as we honour our veterans and the unique history of our neighbourhood. This is one of many examples of our school as a hub for the community to come together here on the West Bench,” said Kristi Tatebe, West Bench PAC chair.
If the weather is unfavourable, the ceremonies will be held at the school’s gymnasium. Signage will be in place on the day of and updates will also be posted on the West Bench Community Forum Facebook page.
The ceremonies include a local piper, a speech by Penticton Indian Band Chief Greg Gabriel, recognition of the Indigenous and local veterans, performances by students and a presentation on the history of the West Bench as Indigenous and veteran land.
A presentation will also discuss the background behind the Selby Park redesign and memorial.
Bringing a chair from home is not necessary, but is welcome.
