Penticton city staff and council want a new high-end hotel near the Trade and Convention Centre.

The city is looking for an expression of interest from developers willing to purchase and construct a hotel at 903 Vernon Avenue.

The new hotel would be required to have at least 90 rooms,

The lot was purchased in 2015 by the city and is currently still owned by them and used for overflow parking for the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Interested parties are asked to file their proposals by the deadline of Oct. 29, 2020.

One of the key parts the city and council are looking for from developers is a full-featured and high-quality proposal for the hotel.

“We all know how important a hotel is to the convention centre, and I’m talking about good quality rooms, not like what we’ve got on Skaha Lake road and some of the other places in the city,” said Mayor John Vassilaki. “What I’m looking for is a hotel with those amenities that folks coming to visit Penticton, whether it’s for a convention or the summertime as tourists, is that they will see it and say wow and stay at this hotel again”

City staff’s proposal requires the developer to have 50 per cent of the parking currently provided on the property moved to a site within 200 metres, in order to maintain the current amount of parking.

With council’s approval, the proposal also allows the hotel structure to take up 70 per cent of the property from 40 per cent.

The increased demand for parking was a concern for council and one that they want to see a potential developer take proper consideration of.

The complete expression of interest information is available on the City of Penticton’s website under bid opportunities in the business and building section.

The city is wanting a deal and construction to begin within 24 months, and the sale of the property contingent on applicants meeting specific milestones and deadlines.
