The Summerland branch of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch is honouring Summerland’s deceased veterans by placing a candle on the graves of veterans in the community’s four cemeteries on Nov. 10 and 11.
“Historically, the Summerland Legion has placed overnight candles on the graves of veterans in early May for VE Day,” said John Dorn, past president of the Legion branch. “We were unable to place them this year. Instead we are placing those candles for Remembrance Day. There are over 450 veterans interred in Peach Orchard, Old Anglican, and Canyon View cemeteries, as well as St. Stephen’s Anglican Church Garden of Remembrance.”
The public is invited to place a poppy on the Memorial Park Cenotaph on Remembrance Day.
Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the Legion will hold a closed Remembrance Day service on Nov. 11. This service can be viewed later on the Summerland Legion’s website.
