Penticton Vees forward Caton Ryan prepares to shoot the puck against Brooks Bandits netminder Zach Zahara on Feb. 1, 2025, at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Hockey fans will vie to claim a 50-50 jackpot of $20,000 at the next Penticton Vees home game, with proceeds to go toward oncology clinic upgrades at the city's hospital.

The BCHL club, in partnership with the South Okanagan Similkameen (SOS) Medical Foundation, said the draw will take place when the Vees host the Cranbrook Bucks on Friday, March 28.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the SOS Medical Foundation and help raise funds for their oncology upgrades,” said Fraser Rodgers, the Vees’ vice-president of business, referring to the non-profit group's $10-million fundraising campaign. “Cancer touches everyone and we hope to see our community rally around a great cause.”

The campaign, which launched in 2022 after it was announced the oncology department would expand, has raised $9 million. The new-look clinic is expected to open this summer, on the third floor of the Penticton Regional Hospital.

Lyla — a six-year-old Penticton philanthropist who recently helped raise $8,000 for the SOS Medical Foundation through lemonade stands, bracelet sales, and holiday ornaments — will have the honour of leading the ceremonial puck drop before the Vees' game.

“This is a true testament to the heart of our community,” said Ian Lindsay, CEO of the SOS Medical Foundation.

"Lyla’s dedication and the ongoing support from fans and donors remind us all how powerful it is when we come together. We are incredibly grateful to the Penticton Vees for partnering with us to make a real impact on local healthcare.”

Starting at midnight before the March 28 game, people will be able to buy their 50-50 tickets in support of the draw at bchhof5050.ca. Fans can also buy their 50-50 tickets at the game.

The SOS Medical Foundation will be accepting donations at a table during the BCHL showdown, inside the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
