The Salvation Army in Penticton is hoping an upcoming open-house event will help solve a problem that the non-profit organization has wrestled with for more than two years.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization has seen its volunteer base drop from more than 150 people to about 40.
While the Salvation Army is always on the lookout for more help, the last two years have been particularly difficult, prompting the need for an open house that will introduce community members to the organization for volunteer recruitment.
June 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the centre — located at 2469 South Main Street — is inviting people to come out and learn more about the work the Salvation Army does within the community, from its food bank program to the thrift store.
“We’re really down in volunteer numbers, due to travel, illness and other things,” said Rosemarie Cargill, a volunteer coordinator at Penticton’s Salvation Army. “We just want to open our building and welcome people to come on in and sign up for something to do.”
Tables with information about the organization will be set up inside the centre on the day of the open house.
Cargill is also hoping the event serves as a way for people to show their support for the centre’s Emergency Disaster Services Team — especially ahead of the anticipated wildfire season.
The non-profit organization is hoping to find local volunteers at the upcoming event who are able to give four hours of their time, either for a morning or afternoon shift.
