Penticton’s “up and coming” atmosphere has attracted another brewery to the downtown core.

Mike Coghill, founder of Yellow Dog Brewing Co. in Port Moody, said the decision to start his next project, Neighbourhood Brewing Company, within the city was an easy one to make.

“Penticton is always growing and when you look around you see lots of artisan local businesses,” said Coghill. “So we want to be apart of that in adding something cool to the community.”

The future brewery, which will be located at Westminster Avenue and Winnipeg Street, will be serving up its own craft beer experience but Coghill said Penticton patrons may still be able to enjoy the odd brew from Yellow Dog.

“It will be serving its own brews, but if Yellow Dog is offering something popular or unique, or vice versa, there may be a little cross-promotion there,” said Coghill.

The venue will also offer food service, though Coghill said it won’t be a full-service restaurant. Their main focus will instead be on their pints.

The brewmaster for Neighbourhood Brewing is Darren Binnema, who has been working for the last few years as lead brewer, under Yellow Dog head brewer Liam Murphy, learning the craft.

“He’s been with us a number of years so now we’re excited to let him take the reins and run with his creativity,” said Coghill.

It’s too soon to comment on exactly what direction Binnema and his team of brewers will take with their beers, but Coghill is confident his brewery will prosper alongside the existing Penticton breweries.

“You go into the breweries that are already here and each one has its own feel and its own vibe created by their beers,” said Coghill. “So it’s not about standing apart, but adding something cool with our own beers.”

“We won’t put out anything we’re not proud of.”

Pending construction, Neighbourhood Brewing Company is hoping to open for summer 2019. For more information about Yellow Dog Brewing Co., visit www.yellowdogbrew.com.
