Summerland Steam remain in top spot in hockey division

Junior B team has record of 12 wins, four losses in regular season action

The Summerland Steam added an overtime win and a loss to their Junior B hockey season with a pair of home games on the weekend.

On Friday, the Steam edged out the Kelowna Chiefs, winning 5-4 in overtime.

The Chiefs took the lead in the first period with a goal at 1:28.

In the second period, Sam Jones of the Steam scored on a power play to bring the game to a tie. Cody Swan assisted.

At 9:52, the Steam added a goal by Scott Robinson, assisted by Ryan Allen and Blake Holowaty to take the lead.

The Chiefs responded with a pair of power play goals, at 8:15 and at 2:13.

In the third period Lucas Jirousek of the Steam scored on a power play to tie the game once more. Gavin Lawrie assisted.

The Chiefs then scored an unassisted goal at 11:06.

The Steam tied the game with 53 seconds remaining when Robinson scored, assisted by Jones.

In overtime, Holowaty scored the deciding goal at 0:45 for the win.

The Saturday game against the Osoyoos Coyotes did not end so well for the Steam.

Summerland lost that game in a 7-3 decision.

Osoyoos dominated the first period with four unanswered goals.

In the second period, the Coyotes expanded their lead with an unassisted goal at 18:50.

The Steam responded at 15:06 when Robinson scored, assisted by Swan.

The Coyotes then scored at 14:05.

The Steam responded at 11:24 with a goal by Swan, assisted by Robinson and Brogan Lautard.

In the third period, Swan scored once more, at 4:46. Robinson and Wyatt Kelly assisted.

The final goal, scored by Osoyoos, came at 3:30.

The Steam are in first place in the Okanagan/Shuswap Conference: Okanagan Division in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

The team’s record is 12 wins and four losses in regular season play.

The next action for the Steam is on Friday, Nov. 3 at the Summerland Arena, when they host the North Okanagan Knights. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
