Summerland Steam defeat two top teams

The Summerland Steam defeated two of the strongest teams in the league in Junior B hockey action over the weekend.

On Friday, the Steam travelled to Kelowna to face the Chiefs,.

The chiefs are the first place team in the Okanagan/Shuswap Conference: Okanagan Division in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

The Steam won the game in a 4-3 decision.

In the first period, Mitchell Gove of the Steam scored at 13:19, assisted by Lane French and Cody Swan.

Cody Loring added a power play goal at 5:23. assisted by Swan and Gove.

In the second period, Gove scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 7:37, giving the Steam a 3-0 lead.

Myles Mattila of the Chiefs responded with an unassisted goal at 3:29.

In the third period, Swan scored for the Steam at 8:14, assisted by French and Gove.

The Chiefs responded with a pair of power play goals.

The first, at 6:43 was scored by Kaden Stewart and assisted by Tyler Love and Mattila.

The next came at 5:25 when Love scored, assisted by Sazh Erhardt and Dylan Kent.

On Saturday, the Steam earned a 4-3 win over the Grizzlies in Revelstoke.

The Grizzlies are the first place team in the Okanagan/Shuswap Conference: Doug Birks Division.

Ryan Bedard of the Grizzlies opened scoring at 8:20 in the first period, assisted by Ryan Pereverzoff and Jaden Hay.

In the second period, Summerland responded with two power play goals, both by Gove.

The first came at 4:50, assisted by Everett Scherger and swan. The second, at 3:05, was assisted by Loring and Swan.

In the third period, the Grizzlies tied the game with a power play goal at 18:36.

The goal was scored by Matt Cadden and assisted by Carter Anderson and Tommy Bodtker.

The Steam responded at 11:34 with a goal by Ty Banser, assisted by Zack Cooper and Loring.

Scherger added a power play goal at 2:17, assisted by Ryan Allen and Swan.

The final goal came with 26 seconds remaining, when Josh Irvine of the Grizzlies scored, assisted by Hay and Pereverzoff.

The next action for the Steam is on Friday when the team travels to Kamloops to face the Storm. The game, at the Memorial Arena, begins at 7 p.m.

The Steam’s next home game is on Saturday against North Okanagan Knights. The game will be at the Summerland Arena beginning at 7:30 p.m.
