Steam face North Okanagan Knights in two games

Summerland remains in top spot in Junior B hockey division

The Summerland Steam had a loss and a win against the North Okanagan Knights in recent Junior B hockey action.

The top-ranked team in the Okanagan Shuwsap Division: Okanagan Conference lost to the last place team in Junior B hockey action on Friday evening when the North Okanagan Knights defeated the Summerland Steam 4-1.

The game was at the Nor-Val Centre in Armstrong.

After a scoreless first period, the Knights took the lead with a goal at 3:11 in the second period.

In the third period, the Knights added two more goals before the Steam scored.

The Steam goal came at 2:33 when Riley Smoler scored from Sam Jones and Scott Robinson.

The Knights responded with an empty net goal at 1:14.

The Steam have a record of 14 wins and five losses in regular season play in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

On Oct. 14, the two teams met up again, this time at the Summerland Arena. This time, the Steam earned the win in a 7-4 decision.

Summerland took the lead early in the first period with a goal at 19:25 by Cody Swan. Scott Robinson and Everett Scherger assisted.

The Knights responded with a goal at 14:58 to tie the game.

At 12:09, Ryan Allen scored for the Steam, assisted by Sam Jones and Gavin Lawrie.

A goal by the Knights at 0:51 tied the game once more.

In the second period, the Steam regained the lead when Cairo Rogers scored at 17:00, assisted by Niall Lawrie.

Lucas Jirousek then scored at 15:29. assisted by Gavin Lawrie and Brogan Lautard.

The Knights responded with a goal at 8:02.

Gavin Lawrie then scored for the Steam at 6:21, assisted by Jones.

The Knights added one more goal at 5:05.

In the third period, Scherger scored at 15:00, assisted by Riley Smoler and Robinson.

The final goal, with 11 seconds remaining, was an empty net goal by Swan, assisted by Rogers and Robinson.

The Steam now have a record of 15 wins and five losses in regular season play. This puts Summerland in the top spot in the Okanagan/Shuswap Conference: Okanagan Division in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

The next action for the Steam is on Friday, Nov. 17 when the team travels to Chase to face the Heat.

The next home game is on Saturday, when they will play the Princeton Posse. The game, at the Summerland Arena, begins at 7:30 p.m.
