Haley Hewer captured the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Collegiate Women’s division, carding 162 at Vernon’s Predator Ridge Golf July 24 to 25.
Hewer, 20, a Pen High grad, had rounds of 86 and 76 holding off Summerland’s Rachelle Nielsen (84, 80 for 164) and Vancouver’s Bethany Ma (85, 83 for 168). Nielson plays for the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelina women’s golf program.
“My tee shots were very accurate today. I am very proud of myself battling back and finishing strong,” said Hewer after the final round.
Hewer, who plays on the Northern Michigan University Wildcats women’s golf program, had the highlight of the event when she aced the fourth hole on the final day. At NMU, Hewer was awarded the most valuable player award with the lowest scoring average.
Cam Davie of Okanagan Falls placed 10th in a field of 20 in the Juvenile boys division, as he shot 164, which was 12 shots back of Prince George’s Cody Bailey, who won in a playoff. Jackson Coates of Penticton was 13th in a field of 17 in the Junior boys division. He shot 174, 24 shots back of winner Brandon Chai of Vernon.
Penticton’s Kurtis Fontinha finished 10 shots behind Marcus Brown of Surrey, who won the Collegiate men’s division, shooting 142. Fontinha, who finished his first season with the NMU Wildcats, finished two shots ahead fellow Pentictonite, Zachary Gardner, who took third shooting 154.
