Lakers lacrosse squad playing its first games

Pen High Lakers are fielding their first-ever field lacrosse team in Victoria

Five weeks after their first practice, the Pen High Lakers field lacrosse team will play their first-ever game.

Coached by Tony Ramsay, the Lakers will be in Victoria this weekend for the Claremont Secondary Spartans 12th annual Spartan Shootout.

“I’m quite excited to see what they can do on the field,” said Ramsay, who is guiding a combined team of juniors and seniors.

Along with being great kids, Ramsay said they have heart and desire to learn.

In the Spartan Shootout, the Lakers will face Ecole Mission Secondary, Vancouver College, Belville High from Washington and Nanaimo District Secondary.

Ramsay isn’t concerned about wins, he just wants his players to put in the effort.

“I think we have some pretty skilled players,” he said. “I think they should do OK.”

Ramsay wants to see his players work hard and have fun. In the time he has been coaching them, he loves seeing the “gleam in their eyes.”

“They are excited to play.”

“I’m super excited,” said Laker Kale Lawrence, who added practices have been intense. “We are all super pumped. It’s going to be really fun. Right now I think we look pretty good. Better than I thought we would be. I think we’re going to do pretty good down there.”
