A karate athlete from Summerland has won silver at the 12th International Soke Cup in Kumamoto, Japan.

Around 500 competitors from around the world participated.

The event is held every three years for those in the chito-ryu style of karate.

Jodi Bartier, a karate blue belt with the Taneda Karate Dojo, competed against some black belt karate athletes at the event. Her category was ladies colour belt, over 40 division.

“It was pretty tough competition,” she said.

In the kata event, she finished second out of eight competitors. Kata is a series of karate forms or movements.

“I was really pleased with my results in kata,” she said.

In kumite, which is the fighting style, she placed third out of three competitors, losing both her fights.

Two other Summerland athletes also participated. Marcus Bartier, a green belt, finished sixth out of 40 competitors in his division while Takeshi Smith, a blue belt, finished sixth out of 20 in his division.

“The whole Summerland team was amazing,” Jodi Bartier said. “They were so focussed.”
