Bergen takes top spot in Ultraman
When John Bergen crossed the finish line in Monday’s portion of the Ultraman Canada triathlon, he was more than 45 minutes ahead of the next runner that day.
Bergen, 41, finished the 84.4-kilometre run on Monday with a time of 7:29:03.
His overall time in the three-day triathlon was 23:48:29.
“Thank you to everyone, especially my crew,” he said following the ordeal. “It was a special three days.”
Bergen’s finish, the fastest in this year’s Ultraman, was the fifth fastest in the history of the race.
The total event covered more than 515 kilometres.
The three-day triathlon began on Saturday with a 10-kilometre swim, followed by a cycle portion of 144.8 kilometres.
On Sunday, participants had 273.5 kilometres of cycling.
The run on Monday ended in Memorial Park in Summerland and concluded the triathlon.
Bergen was in fourth place when he finished the swim, but he quickly made up the time with fast performances during the two days of cycling.
His total time was nearly three hours faster than the second-place finisher.
Roberto Barseghian, 41, finished with an overall time of 26:38:44.
The third finisher was Jen Segger, 31, with an overall time of 26:59:29.
There were 29 participants from around the world in the race, with 27 finishing the course.
