Prison should be examined

Dear Editor:

I was glad to see John Dorn taking Mike Porter to task for his letter in which he attacked Peter Waterman personally for daring to think a prison in or near Summerland might be of economic benefit.

Sinking to the level of snide remarks about a person but not examining the idea is the sign of a weak case.

Kingston, Ont. comes to mind. It operates successfully as a town despite the presence of five prisons and institutions as well as two maximum security penitentiaries in or close by Kingston. This has been the case for many years.

The proposal that there should be a jail in the Okanagan is one that deserves proper scrutiny. All the needs for a workforce with an assured income must be considered. Certainly the proposal should not be rejected out of hand.

Let’s have some thoughtful discussion regarding feasibility.
