LETTER: Trucks will bring bio-solid wastes to Summerland

Open house about proposal scheduled for Wednesday, May 17

Dear Editor:

It was with utter astonishment that I read Dave Smith’s letter to the editor on Thursday April 27.

In it, he informed the citizens of Summerland about a proposed bio-solid waste disposal site in our community.

If the plan is approved, more than 20 trucks a day will unload bio-solid wastes, from several other communities, near our landfill. Right upstream from our reservoir.

The regional district, including our council, will have us believe that there will be little odour, and no seepage into our water supply — that we should trust them and their science on this.

It is imperative and in good faith that our municipal staff and council get prior approval for this plan from the Penticton Indian Band — this site is on their traditional territories and is right next to their lands.

I suggest that as many of us as possible attend the open house on Wednesday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the IOOF Hall in Summerland and voice our concerns over this proposal.

Many other communities have resisted such plans and have stopped them. We must as well.
