Dear Editor:
I trust council is considering the Banks Crescent development very carefully regarding the environmental impact and safety concerns which have been well expressed by many Summerland residents.
I have lived in Summerland more than 50 years and well remember picking beautiful peaches in a productive orchard on this land.
I was surprised to learn it is not in the Agricultural Land Reserve.
Despite the possible short-term benefits a development such as this could bring, we must consider the long-term potential problems.
We have been entrusted to protect our farms and waterways. To quote a Cree proverb, “Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been polluted and the last fish has been caught will we realize that we can’t eat money.”
