Summerland Arts Council Report

Saturday, Feb. 11 is the deadline for nominating someone for the Arts Appreciation Award.

This award will be presented at the annual Community Awards Gala on Feb. 25 and is for someone who has made the greatest contribution to promoting and developing the arts in our community.

This person does not have to be an artist.

Winter Workshops

The Summerland Community Arts Council is offering a series of Winter Workshops beginning this month.

Feb. 11: Beginner Portraiture with Dawn Marie Boucher

Feb. 18: Getting the Most Out of Your Camera with Jeremy Heibert

Feb. 25: Jewelry Making with Karen Griggs of Madam Jewels and the Bead Trails

March 3: Introduction to Acrylics by Barbara Pistak

March 10: Unwoven Scarves by Barbara Wellborn

Philosophers’ Cafe

Summerland Community Cultural Development Committee (CCDC), in conjunction with the Summerland Community Arts Council, will be presenting four Philosophers’ Cafes in the coming months.

They will be held Feb. 29, March 14 and April 11 and 18. Everyone is welcome.

The Philosophers’ Cafes take place at the Summerland Art Gallery, 9533 Main St.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and discussion begins at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation.

Tea, coffee and refreshments will be available. The schedule could change, organizers note.

Cuba Ballet

The Stars of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba present The Magic of Dance Tour at the Kelowna Community Theatre on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 12 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $69.44 for adults, $58.24 for seniors, $47.04 for students and children. They are available at 250-762-5050 and www.balletkelowna.ca

The 35 members of the National Ballet of Cuba will perform a specially-created program: The Magic of Dance, where fiery Latin passion meets spectacular Russian technique in a mosaic of pas de deux and highlights from world famous ballet repertoire. Earning worldwide acclaim, the Ballet Nacional de Cuba has performed in more than 60 countries and received hundreds of international awards, and Cuban-trained dancers are now marquee names in top ballet companies throughout the world.
