Una was born and raised in the farming district of Hughenden, AB. She was predeceased by her 7 brothers and sisters.
At the age of 20, Una moved to Prince George, BC and met the love of her life and lifelong soulmate, Owen Dupre while she was working at the local bakery and residing with lifelong friends, Arlene and Jim Allen. Their next door neighbour was Owen. Soon after meeting Owen, Una took his hand in marriage in 1945.
Una became a kindergarten teacher and truly loved her chosen career. Owen and Una were active members of the community and could always be found in their favourite seats at the Mohawks’ and later Cougars’ hockey games.
In retirement, Una loved to play bridge, sometimes playing twice a day with her close group of lifelong friends, most of whom have predeceased her.
Una spent countless hours volunteering at the Prince George Regional Hospital thrift shop. She dedicated 25 years of her life to this cause. In her quiet time, she loved to quilt and knit. Una was also involved in the Brownie and Girl Guide movement in Prince George, at one point serving as the District Commissioner for that region.
Later in life, Una and Owen discovered the joys of golf and with their friends became known as the “Road Runners” at Pine Valley Golf Club in Prince George. They were amazing golfers. Keeping up to them was indeed a challenge for any of us much younger in years.
The family home on Alward Street was a showcase of love and friendship by both Una and Owen. While Owen planted and maintained the meticulous gardens, it was Una who kept it all organized and tidy. She was proud of the place they called home, which was a reflection of her and Owen’s characters. The doors were always open to the many friends and neighbours that frequently came by.
In 2007, after decades of living in Prince George, Una and Owen made the move south to Summerland. It was there that the two became constant hosts to the many grandchildren and great granchildren that came to know them as the caring and fun folks they were. When Owen passed in 2014, Una remained in the family home until 2015 when a medical incident caused her to become a frequent hospital visitor. A number of compounding ailments over the past year took their toll on Una, but she remained calm and collected throughout, never losing hope of “going out for supper” with family. She loved her shrimp.
Una was a wonderful and caring lady who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her son Edward (Jennifer), daughters Marion (Sheldon) and Yvonne (Stuart), 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, extended relatives, and many friends.
The family wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Dr. Andrew Pavilion, Dr. M. Krabbe, the wonderful caregivers of We Care Homecare, and the Summerland Seniors Village.
