Lorne PARKS

August 9, 2009

Lorne (Larry) Allan Parks of Summerland, BC passed away after a valiant effort, on August 9, 2009 at the age of 78 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Irene and friends who became his adopted family: Denis, Bonnie, Kristal, and Shannon Edwards and families. He was sadly predeceased by his mother Helen Therese Parks (1978) and father Mitchel Francis (Frank) Parks (1969). Larry was born to Helen Therese and M. Francis (Frank) in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 26, 1931. Larry attended High School at Kelvin Tech. In 1947, the family moved to Coquitlam, BC. Upon his graduation from Coquitlam High School in 1948, he went to work for the Bank of Commerce in Vancouver. Larry did not find banking to be suitable for him so he entered nursing school and after graduating he registered in the Arts Faculty at UBC with the intention of taking a combined Commerce and Law Degree. However, Larry met Irene Marie Champagne and marriage replaced the Law goal. He graduated with a Commerce Degree and joined the firm of Clarkson Gordon and Co., Chartered Accountants, as a C.A. Larry, always was searching for knowledge, became a member of Mensa. He applied for and was accepted in the First Executive MBA program offered by Simon Fraser University. In 1975, while travelling on business, he was involved in an automobile accident and sustained a fractured neck which led to his being disabled 10 years later. He and Irene decided to travel. They visited Paris, France for his 50th birthday. Later they acquired a motorhome and visited all of the states in the USA and all the provinces of Canada. Three months after he would normally have retired (1996), he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given little time to live. Upon Larry and Irene’s move to Summerland, he immediately began a search of the internet and was able, with the help of his trusted physicians, to extend his life by 13 years. “Knowledge is power.” Larry will always be remembered for his intellect and generous spirit. The family would like to say thank you to Drs Brent and Cathy Harrold and staff for their compassionate care; Parkdale Manor and their very dedicated staff, Suzanne, Colleen and Jenny; Summerland Seniors Village, Penny Rafter and staff; and the Moog and Friends staff for their loving care in easing the transition of Larry’s life through to his death.
