KATHLEEN LEAMING

November 5, 2010

Kathleen Cicely Leaming (Spall)

6 July 1928 - 5 November 2010. At home, in Summerland, surrounded by her loving family, Kathleen passed away on Friday evening after a long illness. She leaves behind her grieving husband Stan, daughters Ruth, Charlotte, and Cath, son Chris, and five granddaughters, Vita, Olivia, Samantha, Kelsi, and Madison. Kay was the sixth child of James and Johanna Spall of Kelowna. She taught elementary school in many B.C. locations and in Ontario before catching the eye of Stan Leaming, a geologist working near Clearwater. Stan and Kay married in 1955, living first in Kamloops, then in Richmond, and having four children along the way. After retirement, Stan and Kay returned to her beloved Okanagan, settling in Summerland. Kay continued helping people learn, through volunteer work as a literacy tutor for adults, and as a reader to children. Kay took a great interest in people, and found friends everywhere she went. She had many loves: playing Bridge, quilting, playing the piano, reading, going for long walks, and her garden. Never quite satisfied, she strove to be better at all of them---but oh, how she did enjoy them! Kay was pre-deceased by siblings Eric Spall, Dorcas Wilkinson, Robert Spall, Constance Warburton, and Clarice Sarsons. She will be dearly missed by sisters Clara Overend and Beth Weick, sister-in-law Doris Spall, brothers-in-law Geoff Sarsons and Howard Overend, sons-in-law Vincent Galante and Nick Harris, daughter-in-law Linda Leaming and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Gathering was held on Friday, 12 November 2010. Kay has requested that any memorial tributes be made to local charities in support of literacy or education.
