Godfrey CHADBURN

February 16, 2007

GODFREY CHADBURN After a valiant effort to recover from surgery, Godfrey passed away peacefully Friday, February 16th, 2007 in the Chilliwack General Hospital at the age of 81. The only child of Gladys and Gerald Chadburn, he was born June 16, 1925 in Vancouver, where he spent his childhood. After high school he and his mother moved to Summerland where he worked for the Barkwill Brothers at their cannery. This is where he met Verda, a nurse originally from Chilliwack who would be his wife for 55 years. They started their family in Summerland as well and developed many friendships that Dad fondly reminisced about. With their fi rst three children they settled back in Chilliwack after a short time in Vancouver where he completed his teacher training. During the next 25 years he taught in various elementary schools in Chilliwack. He truly enjoyed his profession as it allowed him to connect with many students he often referred to as “his kids”. He was a member and President of the Chilliwack District Teachers Association. After his retirement he enjoyed gardening, his grandchildren, and watercolour painting. He will always be remembered for his optimism, sense of humour, love of the outdoors and people. He is survived by his wife, Verda, his children Joyce (Vasile), Beverly, Brian (Jan), Lois (Derek), grandchildren, Kate, Maxine, Ben and Adam. He will also be missed by his brothers and sisters- in- law, nieces and nephews and cousin George. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Chilliwack United Church with Reverend Doug Ireland offi ciating. Donations in lieu of fl owers may be made in his memory to the Arthritis Society of BC & Yukon Division, the BC Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Chilliwack United Church.
