Update: Train and SUV collide in Shuswap, driver flees

According to CP Rail, the crew of the train was not injured.

The driver of a vehicle that was struck by a train at the 50th Street NE crossing in Canoe on Sunday, Oct. 6 exited the vehicle and fled on foot; CP Rail Police and the Salmon Arm RCMP are searching for them.

According to the railway, the collision happened at 8:20 a.m. on Sunday. One witness told an Observer reporter that a white SUV was hit at the crossing and was pushed about 100 metres down the track at the front of the engine.

Staff Sgt. Scott West of the Salmon Arm RCMP confirmed the driver of the SUV fled the scene. He said the CP Rail Police would be heading up the investigation but the RCMP would assist them in any way possible.

CP Rail stated the train was hauling freight and there were no injuries to the crew.
