The municipality of Summerland has received a grant of $125,000 for the Summerland comprehensive climate action planning project.
The money came from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the federal government, and is part of more than $12 million for 159 initiatives nationwide.
“The Government of Canada is committed to investing in local infrastructure to support municipalities as they plan, build and maintain their infrastructure more strategically,” François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities said when he introduced the funding on Tuesday.
“Our investments in green infrastructure will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contribute to a clean growth economy and strengthen the middle class, helping us plan and build the infrastructure of the 21th century.”
The comprehensive climate action planning project is an effort to reduce corporate and community greenhouse gas emissions.
Once the plan is completed, the municipality will have clear plans with achievable strategies to accomplish the existing goals of becoming carbon neutral in operations and reducing community-wide GHG emissions by 33 per cent of 2007 levels by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050.
The plans will also help address the municipality’s vulnerability to climate change by including climate adaptation considerations, particularly around water conservation.
