The sale of the former Glenfir School property on Pierre Drive is nearly completed.

“We have a final deal on the table,” said Mary Taylor, former business manager for the private school and now a consultant.

The sale is to a new private school which will offer the International Baccalaureate program.

The new school is slated to open in September, 2018.

In summer, to accommodate the sale of the school, a designation and zoning change came before municipal council, to allow for the construction of a 200-unit dormitory on the property.

Taylor said the sale of the school building and property is a positive change.

“We’re handing over the baton to a fabulous new group of people,” she said. “We finally have been able to find the perfect buyer.”

The school building was constructed in 1996 and expanded in 2006. It has an area of 3,700 square metres and sits on a seven-hectare property. It has the capacity to accommodate 275 to 350 students.

The Glenfir School, which formerly occupied the property, was formed in 1993 and at its peak, had students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12.

In the early 2000s, it had an enrolment of around 175 students, but when it closed in March, 2011, enrolment had dwindled to 76. Only six of those students were from Summerland. Most of the rest came from Penticton and the South Okanagan and West Kelowna.
