The Summerland Rotary Club is working with a club in India to renovate and improve a high school in that country.

Vilas Prabhu, a member of the Summerland Rotary Club and a former student at Miraj High School, said the school is in need of a number of important improvements.

The roof is damaged and when it rains, pieces from the clay tiles have fallen into the classrooms, injuring teachers and students.

The school also has sanitation and water quality problems which must be addressed. The school has just two toilets for its 1,200 students.

To improve the school, the Summerland Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Ichalkaranji Textile City are working on an international partnership.

The project has an estimated cost of $90,000 U.S.

The work includes repairing the present building to make it safe for teachers and students, providing safe drinking water, improving sanitation and training staff and students about hygiene and sex education.

“The condition of the school right now is almost unimaginable,” said Aart Dronkers, a member of the Summerland Rotary Club.

Since the Summerland club is small, Rotarians in the community will work with Rotary clubs in Kelowna, Peachland and Penticton.

The work will likely take two years to complete.

The Summerland Rotary Club will hold fundraising drives to raise the money necessary to complete this project.

Tax receipts will be issued for donations to the work.

“For $90,000 U.S., we can change the destiny of 1,200 students,” a note on the Rotary Club’s presentation reads. “That equals a one-time investment of $75 U.S. per student.”
