UPDATE: May 7, 8 a.m.
A single occupant in the home escaped safely while Kelowna Fire Department firefighters struggled to extinguish a fire in the 1800 block of Broadview Rd. in Kelowna last evening.
The fire proved to be difficult to contain and was fought defensively at one point, according to KFD. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire but not before it severely damaged the structure.
The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and will be investigated while the BC Safety Authourity will be called on Monday to assist in the investigation.
KFD said the single occupant was able to evacuate the structure due to a working smoke alarm.
The call came into Kelowna Fire Dispatch just after 6 p.m. when they received a 911 call.
The Fire Department responded four engines one rescue vehicle and a command unit along with 18 personnel.

Fire crews are on scene at a fully involved house fire in Glenmore.
Black smoke can be seen rising from the area for several blocks. At about 6 p.m. the house fire in the 1800 block of Broadview Avenue was reported and at least four fire halls responded.
Witnesses say residents of the home escaped before firefighters arrived. Crews are currently attacking the blaze from outside the residence.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. FortisBC is on scene turning off the power.
