Okanagan home brewers gathered to present their beers at the second annual CAMRA South Okanagan Home Brewing Competition on Sept. 16.

The event, at Square One Hop Growers in Penticton, drew more than 110 attendees to sample 11 home-brewed beers from eight competitors.

“There is something absolutely magical about enjoying a delicious hand-crafted beer, made with passion, while standing among the hops in a hopyard in the sunshine,” said Kim Lawton, president of CAMRA South Okanagan. “You could smell, feel and taste where beer begins in the hopyard.”

The attendees cast their votes for the People’s Choice Awards, while a panel of three professional brewing judges chose the winners of the Brewers’ Choice Awards.

In the People’s Choice Awards, Warren Everton took first place for his Drive Thru Breakfast Stout. He received a $75 gift certificate from Trellis and Vine Crafthouse.

Second place went to Evan Cadwallader for his Northwestern Brown Ale. He received a collection of specialty malts from Square One Hop Growers.

Brad Kotnik’s Slack Tide New England IPA took third place. He received a mash tun and other brewing equipment from Kelowna Brew Supplies.

In the Brewers’ Choice Awards, Everton’s Miami Weisse Sour received first place. Everton won the opportunity to work alongside the brewing team at one of the South Okanagan breweries for a day.

Eric Harding’s The Dandy Lion Dandelion Saison placed second. He received a $75 gift certificate from Trellis and Vine Crafthouse.

The judges for the Brewers’ Choice Awards were Andrew Anker of Highway 97 Brewing, Ian Dyck of Cannery Brewing and Robert Theroux of Bad Tattoo Brewing.

Organizers with CAMRA South Okanagan are planning to host the Home Brewing Competition next year in September. Details will available online at CAMRASO.ca or on CAMRA South Okanagan’s Facebook page.
