Construction activity in Summerland increased in March, according to the most recent figures from the municipality’s development services department.

A total of 21 building permits were issued in March, with a total construction value of $3,106,000. This is higher than during the same month in any of the past five years.

In March 2023, nine building permits worth $691,000 were issued and in March 2022, 13 permits with a value of $1,569,000 were issued.

The value of building permits issued in March 2024 is greater than the value of permits issued in January and February combined.

“March saw some upward growth in construction growth coming from a slow February,” said Brad Dollevoet, director of development services for Summerland.

“Year-to-date construction value is still lower than in previous years, but that was mostly due to cool January and February for new construction. The number of building permits pulled is close to the five-year average.”

From January to March, Summerland has issued 42 building permits, with a total construction value of $6,008,500. During the same period in 2023, Summerland issued 36 building permits, worth $9,068,558 and in the first three months of 2022, Summerland issued 47 building permits, with a total construction value of $10,498,000.
