For the eighth time in nine years, Sumac Ridge Estate Winery has received a prestigious provincial wine award.

On Thursday morning, the winery received the 2011 Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence for British Columbia Wines. The award was given for the winery’s 2006 Steller’s Jay Brut.

Lt.-Gov. Steven Point presented the award.

A total of 11 wines from around the province received awards. There were 309 entries.

Jason James, winemaker at Sumac Ridge, said the award is an important recognition.

“With so many outstanding B.C. wines, it’s an honour to be one of the winners,” he said. “It’s a proud accomplishment for us at Sumac Ridge.

The awards have been given to B.C. wineries for the past nine years.

For five years, Sumac Ridge has won for its Steller’s Jay Brut. The winning vintages were 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2006.

Other Sumac Ridge wines have also been recognized since the awards were started nine years ago.
