Steam open season with two wins

The Summerland Steam began their regular season of Junior B hockey with a pair of wins on the weekend.

On Friday, playing on home ice, the Steam defeated the 100 Mile House Wranglers in a 4-3 decision.

The Steam took the lead in the first period with a power play goal at 12:49. The goal was scored by Scott Robinson, with the assist by Cody Swan.

At 1:34, the Steam added a second goal when Cairo Rogers scored, assisted by Riley Smoler and Robinson.

A goal by 100 Mile House, with 48 seconds remaining in the period, tightened the Steam’s lead.

In the second period, the Wranglers added another goal to tie the game.

The Steam notched two third-period goals, both by Smoler.

At 15:01, he was assisted by Rogers and at 8:43, Sam Jones had the assist.

The Wranglers added an unassisted goal at 8:11, bringing the final score to a 4-3 Summerland victory.

On Saturday, the Steam travelled to Kamloops to earn a 6-2 win over the Storm.

Summerland opened scoring at 12:39 with a goal by Morey Babakaiff, assisted by Jones and Wyatt Kelly.

The Storm answered with a goal at 7:19 to tie the game.

At 4:45, the Steam regained the lead with a goal by Ethan Grover, assisted by Everett Scherger.

In the second period, the Storm tied the game with an early goal.

Summerland answered back with two goals to regain the lead. The first of these came at 11:16, scored by Robinson and assisted by Rogers. The second came with 37 seconds remaining in the period, when Lucas Jirousek scored, assisted by Grover.

In the third period, Grover scored on a power play for the Steam, assisted by Swan and Scherger.

The final goal came at 7:01. Jirousek scored the goal, assisted by Smoler and Kelly.

The next action for the Steam is on Friday, Sept. 15 when the team hosts the Revelstoke Grizzlies.

The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
