Dear Editor:

The 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge is a most historical event, very inspirational and partnered with sorrow. The statue of Mother Canada overlooking the field of the fallen strikingly portrays that.

Three generations of Canadians will travel to Vimy to join with Her Majesty the Queen and leaders in government.

The regiments who fought at Vimy will also be represented by delegates who served in these regiments in the last war.

It is my great honour to be the delegate of the British Columbia Regiment, Duke of Connaught’s Own.

It will be soul-searching to stand on the hallowed ground where “young men fought and young bled to turn the earth to red,” as the poet wrote.

Millions of people around the world will focus on Flanders on April 9. Hopefully they will look on the proceedings as the torch that was placed in our hands by the generation of 100 years ago. The torch would show us the path and light the way for world peace.

They believed and hoped their war would end all wars, and it should have.

Men should not have to endure what they did.
