LETTER: Unions need secret ballot

Secret ballot is fairest method to determine support for unions

Dear Editor:

I was reading the June 17 Vancouver Sun when I came across this paragraph which says that in May, New Democratic Party leader John Horgan told the editorial boards of the Vancouver Sun and the Province that an NDP government would review the labour code with the intention to remove the current rule that sees employees who want to unionize take a vote by secret ballot.

This is, in my opinion, the fairest way to find out if people wish to join a union. It is far better than the check card system of old which you said you prefer.

If the majority of ballots say they wish to join, then you know they truthfully did and will be happy in this union.

I simply couldn’t believe any many that would lead a province could even contemplate such an act as to remove their right to a secret ballot.

My dad and brothers were very strong union (miners and loggers) but they were fair-minded men who knew that not everyone wanted to be unionized and were happy in other work venues.

I’m sure they would not be happy knowing you were thinking of taking these people’s freedom of a secret ballot away from them now.

For what are you going to be remembered? Fairness for all British Columbians or just for unions?
