LETTER: Proposed location seems wrong

I wonder whether anyone has addressed costs that such a project in its proposed location might incur

Dear Editor,

I wonder about some things about the Banks Project. It seems that they have not dealt with two major concerns. 1. Assurance that the Fish Hatchery will have the water they need, and 2. Problems that arise about access to the facility.

I’m an ordinary senior citizen who is in favour of a good place for seniors to live. However, it just seems that the location for this one is wrong and I can’t figure out why this is not obvious.

I’m sure that Summerland would be happy to receive money in taxes from such a project, but I wonder whether anyone has addressed possible costs that such a project in its present proposed location might incur.

Summerland would be responsible for upgrades to the roads needed to access the place.

Also, I could imagine that if the buildings were heavy enough to sink into the dampness below, I’d guess that the proponents would walk away and we’d be left with the mess.

As a senior living close to downtown, I particularly appreciate the freedom I have to go to the library, the doctor’s office, the pharmacy, the hardware store, the Thrift Shop, the dentist, restaurants, the grocery store, the post office, the pool, the optometrist, the bank, the bakery, the insurance place, the chiropractor, the massage therapist, the physio centre and more, all without having to wait for someone to take me.

There’s a freedom living here that is highly valued. Taking a bus limits that freedom.

Why not build such a facility on land that is close to town? Why not follow Larry Achtem’s suggestions?

As you can see, NIMBY is not where I’m coming from. I would like us to be wise, use common sense and say no to a project that has many detractions.
