LETTER: Community conversation has already occurred

Thousands of volunteer hours were spent on Summerland’s Cultural Plan

Dear Editor:

The idea to have guest columnists writing for our local paper is an excellent one. I am so looking forward to reading the different opinions and ideas that will be expressed through this medium.

I read with interest the column in last week’s paper by Don Gemmell and enjoyed it very much.

I would like to make one comment in way of feedback.

In the column, Don Gemmell wrote the following: Summerland needs to adopt a community-wide conversation that will result in a consensus on how the town should evolve. That conversation needs to be “translated into a blueprint that will serve as the foundation for future community decisions.” (not sure who the writer was quoting.)

I would like to suggest that we have already had that conversation and the blueprint is in the form of the Cultural Plan that was released last year.

The task force that spent thousands of volunteer hours, over an 18 month period, have put together for us the findings of what over 2,000 residents said was most important to them and how they wanted to see the community grow. It spells out the “heart and soul” of our community.

All that is needed now, is for the document to be read, respected and put to good use.
