Concert raises funds for symphony
The Penticton Branch of the Okanagan Symphony Society presents a fundraising concert, Summer Arias and More, featuring the beautiful voice of Penticton soprano Lauren Liddicoat accompanied by pianist Roslyn Frantz Thursday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Penticton.
Short list announced
The George Ryga Society and Okanagan College have announced the short list for the eighth annual George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature. This award celebrates his legacy by searching for an outstanding work of literary and social value by a B.C. writer.
This year’s finalists are: Gabor Gasztonyi’s A Room in the City; Sylvia Olsen’s Working with Wool: A Coast Salish Legacy and the Cowichan Sweater; Benjamin Perrin’s Invisible Chains; John Vaillant’s The Tiger; and Richard Wagamese’s One Story, One Song.
The winner of the 2011 Ryga Award will be announced at a gala presentation on Oct. 1 at the Centre Stage.
All of the books are available through the Summerland Branch of the Okanagan Regional Library.
The Summerland Art Gallery is accepting submissions for the 2012 season. Proposals should include: C.V., biography, artist’s statement, five to 20 photographs of work that reflects the theme of the proposed exhibition. Deadline Sept. 20.
At the gallery
Currently at the Summerland Art Gallery is My Journey featuring works by Michael Simes. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Don’t forget that the Summerland Merchants Association have arranged for artists to be painting and displaying art on the patio of the Vanilla Pod on Saturdays.
And, of course, there are the beautiful street banners. Bids are being accepted at the Arts Centre. They make beautiful wall hangings, gifts, etc.
Works on display
Twenty artists and four potters have works on display and for sale at the gallery in Peachland on Hwy 97 just south of the traffic light at Princeton Ave. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.
Searching for the Sublime, featuring works by Carolyn Wren is at the Kelowna Art Gallery until Oct. 30.
