Following an aid trip to Bangladesh earlier this month, a Summerland woman is working to raise money to help an organization working in that country.

Earlier this year, Carolyn Huston spent time in Bangladesh, with Agape Social Concern.

The organization was looking to build a school there with enough classroom space for 500 children.

Huston is also on the advisory council of The Canadian Leadership Assistance Program, an organization created to provide help in the Chittagong Hills Tracts area of Bangladesh.

In order to visit the Chittagong Hills Tracts area, Huston needed special permission and police help.

Even with this help, they received some opposition, when a group met them, stopped them from proceeding, and told them to leave.

“There were reasons to be afraid,” Huston said.

Because of the experiences they had in Bangladesh, Huston and others registered their organization as a Canadian society at the beginning of May. Because of this registration, it is easier for them to operate in Bangladesh.

The organization has partnered with The Millennium Program, based out of Fort Langley, B.C.

Funding goes through The Millennium Program, which also issues tax receipts.

Huston has been working to raise money to assist in the work in Bangladesh.

On June 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Huston and others will hold a garage sale, barbecue, steeped tea sale, bake sale and bottle drive at the Julia Street Community Church.
