An interim curator has been appointed at the Summerland Museum.

Alex Weller will serve as the museum’s curator until Nov. 1, filling the position held by Amy McCroy.

Weller, who has a Masters degree in public history from Western University in London, Ont., has worked at numerous museums and historical facilities in Canada.

Weller is originally from Invermere, B.C. and has worked at the museum there. She has also worked at facilities including Pier 21 in Halifax and a museum in Crowsnest Pass.

Weller believes her training and experience will enhance the museum.

“The community is going to benefit from having a trained curator coming in,” she said, “so we can protect the artifacts.”

McCroy, the curator since January 2016, is leaving to pursue her doctorate at a university in the United Kingdom.

“Amy’s contribution is bringing us into 21st century standards at the museum,” said Sandra Nicolson, chair of the museum board.

Nicolson said the museum is working to process a backlog of acquisitions.

In addition, the educational component of the museum has become more prominent this year. In the past three months, 300 students have been at the museum. This is more than in the previous five years.
