A Summerland baker is working to bake 150 cakes this year, in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday.

Sophia Zang said she was inspired to bake the cakes after seeing Summerland’s abandoned art project.

The art project has 150 pieces of artwork, which are being dropped off at locations around the world.

But Zang’s cakes will not be abandoned. Instead, she is baking chocolate birthday cakes for Summerlanders 80 years of age or older.

She began the baking project at the start of the year and so far, she has received more than 60 requests for the cakes.

“The people I’ve delivered cakes to are so happy,” she said. “It makes their day and it makes my day too.”

While all the cakes are chocolate, the decorations are a little different for each one.

A lot of the cakes will be distributed later this spring.

“May is going to be one of my busiest months,” she said. “I have at least 30 birthday cakes to make in May.”

Requests for the cakes are still coming in. Those who would like to receive a birthday cake from Zang are asked to add their names to the lists set up at Pharmasave and at the Summerland Community Arts Centre.

The cake project will continue during the rest of this year.
