Though it just opened to visitors a few months ago, the new extension to the Penticton Lakeside Resort is drawing attention.

The “West Wing,” which features wood-primary construction in the six-storey, 70-unit expansion earned the Lakeside top honours in the hospitality category at the ninth annual Thompson Okanagan Kootenay Commercial Building Awards last month.

“It has been great seeing the recognition we are getting from different architectural media and just from the eco-traveller as well,” said Brannigan Mosses, director of sales and marketing for the resort and conference centre.

She noted that part of bringing the expansion together was working with “fabulous local companies.”

The glulam beams, columns and cross-laminated panels were built and supplied by Structurlam and the general contractor was Greyback Construction Ltd.

Later this month, the Lakeside is holding a private event and plaque presentation in remembrance of Nick Bevanda, vice president and design principal of HDR|CEI Architecture Associates Inc., who was the lead design architect and managing principal for the project.

“Great care was taken to emphasize and highlight the wood structure which also functions as the finish throughout the building,” according to the Lakeside’s release.

“It’s now becoming an attraction, not just from a local standpoint, but it is getting attention from all over, so that is cool for Penticton,” said Mosses.

The Osoyoos Indian Band administration building, in Oliver, also features wood construction and took home the award for that category at the gala on Sept. 29. Greyback was the contractor for that building as well, and it was designed by Womer and Associates.

Other notable area buildings include the Bright From The Start Child Care facility at Okanagan College Penticton and the 8th Generation Wine Shop in Summerland, which both took home awards of merit.

The annual event was sponsored by the Southern Interior Construction Association, RE/MAX Commercial and MNP LLP Accounting. The Western News’ parent company, Black Press, was the media sponsor and category sponsors included Woodworks B.C., RBC Royal Bank NAI Commercial Okanagan, Heimann & Sons Masonry Inc., NCA Commercial and Greensheet Construction Review.
